In memory of the Chinese workers and fighters who died for France during

World War I from 1914-1918

Commemorative stele of the Chinese workers of World War I

This stele is not easy to find unless you are looking for it. It is located in the Baudricourt garden, and pays tribute to the Chinese workers and fighters who died for France during the First World War. This stele was inaugurated on November 2, 1998, ten years after the installation of the first commemorative plaque, which was inaugurated rue Chrétien-de-Troyes in the old district of l'Îlot Chalon near the Gare de Lyon.

Places that pay tribute to the workers and fighters of World War I are also found in Érin, Noyelles-sur-Mer, as well as in Nolette, where we can find the Chinese Cemetery of Nolette.

The British government decided to build a Chinese cemetery in Nolette in 1921 for Chinese workers employed by the British army during the First World War. With more than 800 graves, this cemetery is not only the largest Chinese cemetery in France but also in all of Europe.

This stele was inaugurated on March 25, 2018. The association Group of Historical Research on the Tank Workshops of Érin ("Groupe de Recherches Historiques des Ateliers de Tanks d'Érin") and Mrs. Catherine Costanza, interested in the history of Chinese workers, created the project Érin - La Grande École. They also organized the commemoration and exhibition: the Chinese workers of the Great War, at Érin’s tank repair workshops.
